Food for Thought with Prof. Trullinger

“What is Immortality For?”
Do we need eternal life in order to be happy? Maybe not, but what if happiness isn’t the point of life in the first place? In this talk, I hope to spark discussion about Immanuel Kant’s idea that the afterlife (if there is such a thing) is not about endless pleasure or endless punishment. In essence, Kant thinks we are called to improve our moral character as much as possible, and perfect goodness is so transcendent it would take an everlasting lifetime to achieve it.
Come and discuss with Professor Trullinger and friends! Friday, February 6 at 12 pm in the Club Room on Foggy Bottom. Sign up here.

Recommended Event — Art History Lecture

On behalf of GWU’s Visiting Artists and Scholar Committee, we would like to extend an invitation to the students and faculty in the English Department to attend our upcoming lecture. On Wednesday, February 4 we will host Dr. Robert Nelson, a renowned professor in the Department of the History of Art at Yale University and current CASVA scholar at the National Gallery of Art.
Robert Nelson’s current research and teaching focuses on medieval art, mainly in the Mediterranean, and the history and methods of art history. In Wednesday’s lecture, titled “From Ritual Book to State Relic: A Cultural Biography of a Greek Illuminated Manuscript in Florence”, Nelson will use the progression of this document to forefront cultural changes during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and in Byzantine Italy.
If you would consider sharing this event with your students and faculty, we would greatly appreciate your support. We have attached a .pdf file of the event poster for your convienence. The lecture will be held on GWU’s campus in the Smith Hall of Art, Room 114, at 6:15pm. There will also be a reception with Robert Nelson in Gallery 102 (Smith Hall) immediately following the lecture.
