The GW Investment Institute wouldn’t exist without Mr. Ramsey’s vision and support
Mr. Ramsey had the vision that GW students should have the opportunity to learn more about finance and investing by managing a portfolio of real money. In addition to the idea, he and his wife, Norma, generously provided $1 million to launch our first fund, the Ramsey Student Investment Fund in 2005. Providing the initial investment allowed us to focus on long-term investing and studying business fundamentals.
W. Russell (Russ) Ramsey is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Ramsey Asset Management, Co-Founder of the Greater Washington Partnership, and Co-founder of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from George Washington University and was named to the GW All-Century Baseball Team and the Athletic Hall of Fame. He serves as Chair of the Governing Board of the GW Investment Institute and Chairman Emeritus of GW Board of Trustees.
For the past fifteen years, Mr. Ramsey has been engaged with the GWII. He has pushed us to improve and we now have four student investment funds. He encourages us to think about investment trends, for example the impact of technology on the asset management business, and with his help we recently launched a quantitative investment course and fund. And he cares deeply about the students, many of whom have benefited thanks to the Ramsey scholar program.
Mr. Ramsey has been extraordinarily generous with his time, expertise, and funds to help the GWII, GW University, and the greater D.C. area and we are so pleased that he is being recognized with this honor. The Washington Business Hall of Fame “is the region’s signature lifetime achievement award that recognizes and honors individuals who have made a lasting and significant impact on the Greater Washington region through the private sector economy, and serve as role models for the next generation of leaders.”
We encourage you to watch the video to see Senator Mark Warner (GW BA ‘77) introduce Mr. Ramsey for this “long overdue” honor as a leader in the business, education, and philanthropic world and then hear Mr. Ramsey speak about his life and provide advice for young entrepreneurs.
“I want you to set big goals and never let anyone discourage you or suggest you are not good enough. Wake up every day determined to be better, to be smarter, to be the first at school, work, or play, and the last one to leave. As long as you give 100% and are true to that commitment you can never have any regrets.” Russ Ramsey
