Big news! I got malaria! I was diagnosed with it two weeks ago before leaving to Paris and after coming back I felt the symptoms worst than before so I was checked out again and the malaria in my body had almost tripled. So I chose to stay at the hospital for the night for a quicker treatment. It was a nice way to relax for a moment and to catch up on rest. One of our staff members, Nathalie, stayed with me the whole time. We were able to watch TV all night and the room had a/c so I was #livingthelife!
My night nurse's name was Comfort so that was comforting #haha. It was the first time I was hospitalized since I was born so I was pretty scared especially getting the IV in me but I am a-okay now. I finished today my last malaria medication. So I am hoping for the best.
I'm currently getting ready to start my ISP which is independent student project! All of SIT's program consist of this. It begins in the last month of the program and students have the choice of conducting their own research or working at an internship. I have chosen an internship so I will be moving Tuesday the 7th to Kribi for 4 weeks! I will be interning with Women’s Promotion and Assistance Association aka WOPA in a program regarding sex workers and peer education to combat HIV/AIDS. While sex workers is something I always hear and have learned about it briefly, it is not something I have focused on. So to prepare for my internship I have been reading extensively on sex workers, sex tourism, and HIV/AIDS prevention programs. It has been really interesting because I am learning about the feminization of poverty and how sex work can be direct outcome of the global capitalist system.
At the end of my four weeks, I have to write a 30-40 page paper on what I did with WOPA and about a small research project I do within WOPA itself. It's going to be awesome! My friends in the program have awesome topics ranging from the decolonization of Cameroonian women in their usage of natural hair, food sovereignty and land grabbing, and the commercialization of coffee. I'll be returning to Yaounde on December 1st and we'll present our projects the 2nd and the 3rd. Then the 4th, we leave to Kribi again for four days for a debrief on returning to the U.S and to enjoy the beach.
It's all happening so fast! I can't believe I have barely six weeks left here. Today my host family was leaving to church and I wanted to cry. Tomorrow is my last day with them until I come back in December. It is so bittersweet, as bad as I want this ISP period to go by fast so I can be back here again, I want it to go slow so I can enjoy my last moments with Cameroon.

No se si saben pero tengo/tuve malaria! Me dijeron hace dos semanas antes de irme a Paris y después cuando regresamos me sentía peor entonces hice otro examen y el malaria en mi cuerpo casi se triplico. Entonces decidí quedarme la noche en hospital para un tratamiento mas rápido. En verdad fue bueno para relajarme y descansar. Una trabajadora del programa se quedo conmigo todo el tiempo. Pudimos ver televisión toda la noche y el cuarto hasta tenia aire entonces yo estaba viviendo la vida.
Mi enfermera en la noche se llamaba Comfort. En español su nombre es comodidad, y en verdad eso fue algo muy bueno de escuchar jaja. Me dio miedo por que si tengo buena memoria es la primera vez que yo he estado internada en un hospital desde que nací. Bueno, ahora estoy mejor, estoy esperando por lo mejor.
Ahora mismo me estoy preparando para comenzar mi proyecto independiente. Le ultimo mes de mi programa consiste en un estudio independiente o trabajar con una organización. Yo decidí trabajar con una organización de mujeres que se llama WOPA en un programa que consiste de la educación del sida para mujeres que son trabajadoras sexuales para mejorar su salud y ayudarlas a trabajar en una forma mas cuidadosa. Este tema es algo que yo siempre he escuchado pero nunca lo he aprendido formalmente entonces me estoy preparando leyendo literatura sobre el tema. Ha sido muy interesante por que estoy aprendiendo en la feminización de la pobreza y como el trabajado de sexo sale directamente del sistema capitalista global.
Al final de las cuatro semanas, tengo que escribir un papel de 30-40 paginas sobre lo que yo hice con WOPA y sobre un pequeño estudio que hago con la organización. Es algo muy chévere, mis amigos en el programa tiene unos temas buenos. Una va hacer un estudio en la descolonización de las mujeres Cameruneses en su huso de pelo natural, otra en soberanía alimentaria y acaparamiento de tierras, y otra en la comercialización del café. Yo regreso a Yaundé el primero de diciembre y presento mi proyecto el dos o el tres. Y al cuatro, nos vamos a Kribi otra vez por 4 cuatro días para hablar de nuestro regreso a los EEUU y para disfrutar y relajar.
Todo esta pasando muy rápido! No lo puedo creo que tengo máximo de 6 semanas aquí. Hoy mi familia fue a la iglesia y casi llore. Mañana es mi ultimo día con ellos hasta cuando regrese en Diciembre. Es muy “bittersweet” que en español es agridulce por que quiero que las 4 semanas vuelen para ya estar aquí otra vez, pero también quiero que se demoren para poder disfrutar mis últimos momentos en Camerún.
Ah, como es la vida de loca.
