Purpose

Education and education policy in the 21st century has become substantially transformed by larger processes of globalization, including shifting labor markets, new technologies, increased cross-border mobility, the rise and influence of international organizations, international testing, and political movements since the 1980s that have emphasized education as a private and economic good. The GW Global Education Lab is interested in understanding the types of education reforms that are born out of these larger global trends, such as the incorporation of global competence education into education policy and programming; global mobility programs and virtual exchanges for students and educators; and initiatives focused on sustainability and climate change education. Our research aims to understand the launch and development of these initiatives and policy trends at global levels; how they are enacted in different local, sub-national, and national contexts, and with what consequences; and how they are experienced by different stakeholders, including students and educators.
