PhD Fellowships

The NRT PhD Fellowship is among the most prestigious ways that the National Science Foundation supports PhD students. DTAIS (Design of Trustworthy AI Systems) fellows will earn a PhD in either Computer Science or Systems Engineering. Fellows share an interdisciplinary core sequence building depth in trustworthy AI in systems, with courses that include algorithm design, bias detection, system architecture, and socio-technical and policy implications.

Fellows will benefit from the flexibility of having full tuition and stipend support from the NSF (instead of funding tied to a particular faculty project), and from an innovative program to support their scholarship and professional development. Research formulation will be supported by seminars and a summer boot camp to provide broad exposure to relevant research problems and implementation context. A strong mentorship program supports professional development and provides access to experts in ethics and communication.

Application Process:

Apply directly to either the Computer Science or Systems Engineering PhD Programs. In addition to standard application requirements for each degree we are also looking for:

  • Eagerness to engage in making an impact (an additional essay is required in the application process).
  • We expect most students to enter with a relevant MS degree in fields including but not limited to: computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics, physics, statistics.   We will also review applications from candidates with only a Bachelor’s degree who can demonstrate the potential for success in an interdisciplinary program.
  • By requirement of the NSF program, these NSF-funded fellowships are only open to US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
