Since becoming a Graduate Ambassador for the Colombian College of Arts and Sciences, the most frequent questions I am asked relate to employment and funding for your new life as a Graduate Student in Washington D.C. This blog post will focus on one method of funding your new life here at GWU: through part-time employment.
It is not uncommon for some students to have full-time jobs and attend GWU on a part-time basis, but if you are starting out as a full-time student and are interested in supporting your studies with some part time work, there are several great outlets that you can utilize to make the most of your graduate experience.
- Student Employment
One of the best ways to increase your cash flow while studying is to actually work at GW! Jobs are posted regularly through on the Talent Management portal and include roles such as Research Assistants, Teaching Assistants, Communications Assistants, Recreational Services Support and many more. One of the great things about working at GW is that you get exposure to another side of GW that most students don’t see. Working with faculty and staff has broadened my perspective as a Graduate Student and I am very thankful for the various opportunities I have had in these roles.
You can find out more about Student Employment by visiting this page.
- Careers Services
Each college at GW has their own specific Careers Service counselors that are qualified to help you get to where you want to be. Whether you need resume and cover letter support, or you need a little more preparation for interviews, the Careers Service Centers are here to help. CCAS have their own Careers Service Center and you can find out more about the services they offer here.
- Handshake
Handshake is an online, personalized app that helps students find their dream job. As a Graduate Student at GWU you get to access this service for free and can connect with employers from every industry, large or small! I recently completed a summer internship with a company I found through Handshake and I found the application-to-hire process much smoother and quicker than other Job Boards I have used in the past. Be sure to sign up for this great service if you are looking for a new role to take on once you get to GWU!
- Career Connect
Career Connect is an exclusive online community that provides access to over 1,900 GW Alumni and other mentors in 14 industry areas for professional development, career advice and mentoring, and networking opportunities. One of the great things about GW is the strong Alumni network so making connections early on will set you in good stead for any professional prospects in the future.

Enrolling in a Graduate Program is a huge decision and the financial obligations that accompany it can be very daunting. Supporting your studies with a part-time job is a great way to relieve some of these stresses, as well as serving as another avenue to integrate into the GW community.
