Every August seems to bring on something new: a new school year, new faces, new perspectives on topics following summer reading, new things you want to learn. For me, this August has brought on a lot of newness. New city, new community, new school. My name is Anna, and at the beginning of the month I moved to DC from North Carolina to pursue my masters in New Media Photojournalism at George Washington. I didn’t know many people in the area and wasn’t seeking a specific dream job, it just felt like the right next step.
As a new student and resident in the area, I know this newness will fade, so I’ve been trying to take advantage of the many opportunities and outlets around me. In addition to the GW community support, the city on its own seems to offer something that everyone can resonate with. The colorful row houses are a visual reminder of the eclectic individuals that make up the city, an encouragement to more outwardly show one’s personality/quirks. Having moved from the mountains of North Carolina where I got my undergraduate degree, I have found a sliver of outdoor community/activity around the Rock Creek Park area. There’s also an abundance of museums and exhibitions (many of which are free!) in addition to an array of food/music events.
Change is weird, but it’s also refreshing. To all other new graduate students, I encourage you to take advantage of your surroundings. Sure, work hard in your classes and utilize the incredible faculty/staff and resources available to you at GW. You got here for a reason and you’re resilient. But also go to that free dance class or social event, stop at the farmers market down the street, or try that international cuisine you’ve never experienced. Press into your time here in DC and at GW, it’ll go by quick. I’m uncertain of a lot of things moving forward, but I’m embracing every moment and learning a lot along the way.
