Welcome to the second edition of the The Scoop! A guide for all you’ll need to know about life as a Colonial! Today we’re talking about how to navigate your way around DC!
Traffic in the DC area is notorious. Luckily, DC has public transportation options and is consistently ranked a top 10 city for car free living and bike riders. You have a ton of different options to explore the city as well as nearby Maryland and Virginia.
- Metrorail: The Washington Metro Area Transit Authority runs the extensive bus and metro rail system. Metro is a great transit option for everyone, but especially if you choose to live outside of DC proper in nearby Maryland or Virginia. Metro uses a simple color coded line system that spans to serve more than 90 stations. Most GW buildings are accessible via the Orange, Blue, or Silver lines with the Foggy Bottom/GWU station located in the heart of our Main Campus.
- Bus: Metrobus runs seven days a week with over 1,500 buses in its fleet. Can’t get there via metrorail? There’s a bus for that.
- Biking: Programs like Capital Bikeshare and 56 miles of dedicated bike lanes throughout the city, make riding a bike to work or school a fun and healthy option for many GW students. Check out one of GW’s recommended bike routes to explore the city.
- Scooters: Electric scooters have become the latest trend in dock-less travel in the District. With a multitude of options (Bird, Lime, Lyft, Skip, Spin, and Jump), you’ll see electric scooters on every street corner in DC these days. All you need is an app, scan a barcode, give it a kickstart and off you go!via GIPHY
Walk: If you like to walk, you’re in luck! DC is a relatively flat city which makes our location a walker or runner’s dream. You can explore the city on foot by checking out one of the free walking tours.
