H-1B Visa

GW offers employment-based visa sponsorship that allows individuals to work for the university on a temporary or permanent basis, it is subject to applicable federal laws and regulations. Office of the Provost, International Services Office (ISO), Human Resources (HR) and the Office of General Counsel (OGC) are the only administrative units with authority in this matter.

Any commitments on employment-based visa sponsorship made by unauthorized departments or individuals are not considered legally binding.

Short-Term/Temporary Appointment

Process

CCAS generally supports all positions deemed eligible for H-1B sponsorship by the Office of the Provost, with the exception of Post-doctoral positions.

  1. We recommend Departments consult with CCAS Global about H-1B Visa Sponsorship prior to submitting a request.
  2. Department must obtain the College's approval on any petition to sponsor foreign nationals to work at GW before initiating the application process with ISO. A CCAS Internal Approval Routing Sheet is required to be attached with any application submitted via ISO Gateway.
  3. Once approved by CCAS, the Department may move forward with the university process and submit the application via ISO Gateway (For step-by-step instructions, visit ISO website.)
  4. The visa sponsorship process may be complex and lengthy, therefore we kindly ask the GW host department to submit applications as early as possible to allow sufficient time for processing.

Required Documents

Departments need to submit the following documents to ccasglobal@gwu.edu to obtain the college's approval. ISO will not start processing these requests without seeing the college's approval.

  • Appointment Letter by the University
  • Department Obligations & Responsibilities for Sponsoring H-1B Employment Visa (Download template)
  • H-1B Employment Visa Routing Sheet (Download template)

Permanent/Regular Appointment

CCAS departments can initiate the application for an H-1B visa with ISO directly using ISO Gateway on behalf of any faculty of a regular rank, whose employment with GW is on a more permanent basis. For these types of requests, the department needs to send ISO the written appointment letter by the university.
