Compensation and Effective Coping Strategies

Compensation refers to the use of other resources to make up for challenges in different areas, such as masking. Dr. Wallace and Dr. Mcquaid discuss how autistic people compensate in relation to sensory differences and executive function. Major findings include: autistic people assigned female at birth compensate more for EF challenges, sensory differences, and daily living skills than autistic people assigned male at birth; autistic people assigned female at birth compensate more for flexibility than emotional regulation; autistic people assigned male at birth compensate more for emotional regulation than flexibility. They also include quotes and testimonies from autistic participants qualifying their experiences with compensation.
