The Learning Assistant program at GW offers a unique opportunity for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates across the disciplines to work together to improve undergraduate instruction.
Modeled after the successful University of Colorado-Boulder program, the GW LA Program places talented undergraduates into classrooms as Learning Assistants (LAs), where they work closely with the lead instructor to plan and enact research-based teaching practices. LAs also run problem-solving sessions and study groups outside of class. As a result of the experience, the LAs develop sophisticated teaching skills, and simultaneously gain a deeper understanding of their discipline.
Together, we will:
- Foster Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration for Teaching: Bring together a team of faculty and students across disciplines to support institution-wide adoption of research-informed teaching practices.
- Enhance the Student Academic Experience: Increase the quantity and quality of peer interaction, particularly in our large-enrollment introductory courses.
- Support Student Learning: Demonstrate multi-dimensional learning gains for LAs and all undergraduates in LA-supported classrooms.
- Spark Interest in Teaching and Learning: Increase the number of undergraduates who seek additional training or experience to better understand how people learn.
