DSA Staff Members Receive Awards from NASPA Region II

We would like to extend our congratulations to two DSA staff members for receiving awards from NASPA Region II: Carol Galladian, Center for Career Services, the 2016 Fred Turner Award AND Cierra Kaler-Jones, Center for Student Engagement, the 2016 Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

The Fred Turner Award honors a NASPA member who has served in leadership roles at the state, regional, national, or international levels of NASPA, and who has had, at minimum, ten continuous years of NASPA membership.  The Fred Turner Award is NASPA’s equivalent of a lifetime achievement award; each recipient has brought honor and dignity to the student affairs profession, and to NASPA as an association, for a sustained period of time.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award recognizes achievement, involvement, and potential for leadership in emerging Student Affairs professionals.  Nominees for this award must be students pursuing a masters degree related to student affairs with the intent of pursuing a career in the field. Nominees may not be current full-time employees of an institution.  Preference will be given to students who also have a graduate assistantship or internship experience in a student affairs department.

Congratulations Carol and Cierra on these achievements! Region II Awards will be presented at the Awards Luncheon at the NASPA Region II Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA from June 4-6, 2017.

Staff Spotlight

Name: Ashley Trick

Position: Operations Coordinator, Center for Career Services

Education: B.A. in Human Services and Social Justice; Pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, both from GW

Years at GW: Five years (four as a student employee) and one year full-time.

What is a typical week like for you in Career Services? Lots of behind the scenes work-supervising 25+ student staff members, running three email accounts, and coordinating leave reports, event expenditures, logistics for all programming, and much more!

How does working at GW compare to being a student here? Since I'm still in school, it's not all that different--just a much earlier bed time.

What are your hobbies outside of work? Being a foodie, curating playlists that are 90% Motown, reading feminist literature, and watching hours of Netflix after I've convinced myself that "I deserve it".

What is one of your favorite GW memories?  Going to the GW Inaugural Ball after President Obama's re-election.

Anything else you'd like to add that we should know about you? Important Reads: “Black Lives Matter: Eliminating Racial Inequity in the Criminal Justice System” and “Poverty Is Sexist

Staff Spotlight

Name: Lindsay McConnell

Position/Department: Associate Director, Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities

Education: Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Master of Arts in Counseling in Higher Education, both from the University of Delaware

Years at GW: 8 years in June!

What do you do for fun in your spare time? I try to spend as much time as possible in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where my parents live. I grew up spending my summers near the ocean so it is my favorite thing to do. Here in DC, I spend my spare time working towards my Doctorate in Education here at GW and I am also a barre3 instructor.

What do you enjoy most about your job and/or working at GW? One of the most remarkable things about my time at GW has been the incredible colleagues with whom I have had the opportunity to work. I feel challenged to learn and grow in new ways by the wonderful staff here. The dedication of the staff to our students and their experiences both inside and outside the classroom is inspiring.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Introvert, Learner, Loyal

What is your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving - Nothing better than great food and time with loved ones.

New Staff

Name:  Ulka Agarwal

Position:  Staff Psychiatrist

Department: Medical Services, Colonial Health Center

Education: Doctor of Medicine, Rosalind Franklin University; Psychiatry Residency, University of Washington

Last institution worked: California State University, East Bay

What is the best vacation or trip you have taken? The best vacation I ever took was to Thailand with my sister, where I got to visit an elephant sanctuary and swim with the elephants in the river.

What was one of your most memorable meals? A sampling of appetizers at Rasika here in DC, on the night I got engaged.

If you could meet anyone from history, who would it be and why? My ancestors – I would love to learn more about my family’s history and where we come from.

Can you tell us about any hidden talents or authors? I sing and play the ukulele, and I give talks across the country on plant-based nutrition.

Name:  Kaitlyn Schmitt

Position:  Program Coordinator, Student Involvement

Department: Center for Student Engagement

Education: Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, University of Notre Dame; Master of Arts in Higher Education, Boston College

Last institution worked: College of William & Mary

What is the best vacation or trip you have taken? I’m a big fan of Disney vacations, especially to the amusement parks. But I think the best trip was the Disney cruise in Alaska. It was fun to learn about a new place’s culture and history while still getting the Disney experience!

What was one of your most memorable meals? My favorite meal every year is Christmas morning breakfast. My parents host our extended family at their house where I grew up. My dad cooks kielbasa, my mom makes savory dishes like baked eggs casserole and cheesy potatoes, and my siblings and I prepare the cut-out cookies and the delightfully sweet monkey bread. It’s my favorite because of the delicious food that we eat only once a year combined with the traditions and fellowship of family in my childhood home. Plus I love eating the leftovers!

If you could meet anyone from history, who would it be and why? I’ve always admired Eleanor Roosevelt for her leadership, particularly about women’s issues. I would love to meet her and learn what leadership lessons I could.

Can you tell us about any hidden talents or authors? In high school I was very involved in the colorguard team, so I have some surprising flag-spinning and rifle-spinning skills. I haven’t practiced them as much as I would like since high school, though.
