Community Engaged Faculty, Dr. Tara Scully

Dr. Tara Scully, Director of the Sustainability Minor and Assistant Professor of Biology, continues to inspire non-science and science majors with her introductory biology and sustainability courses.

As noted in 2016 from GW's  Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Scully's work “received the Engaged Faculty Award in recognition of her successful integration of service with the biology curriculum.”  In 2019, Dr. Scully was one of the five recipients of the Morton A. Last semester, Dr. Scully's course, Sustainability 3003: World on a Plate, provided an "interdisciplinary perspective on the impact of food on the future of the environment, the economy, and society." This semester, Dr. Scully's course, Biology 1008: Understanding Organisms, "combines community-based activities, which take [students] out into the community to educate them on ecological issues, agricultural problems related to other organisms, and other environmental issues."  To learn more about where students' service, please click here to view the course page on Give Pulse.

Recently, Dr. Scully and other scholars published Statistical Analysis of GLCM Texture Features and Microstructures in SEM Images of Crossostrea virginica Exposed to Atrazine. Without going into specific details, scholars examine how “herbicides” effect “crossostrea virginica” and how the effected “Eastern oysters” “influence a range of economic and ecological systems” (170).
