General Rules

Contestant Order
Each contestant will be given a randomly generated number determining his/her order in the competition within the corresponding group. Each Contestant shall obtain the number upon registration on the Final Competition Day.

Waiting Area
While contestants of the same proficiency level are competing, any competitor who has not yet performed must wait outside. Contestants should not leave the waiting area or talk to their teachers or friends. When it is a contestant’s turn, he/she will be signaled by an assistant to wait at the entrance before entering the stage.

Speech
Each contestant will be provided two topics to choose from for the improvised speech 5 minutes before entering into the room so that he or she can prepare for it. The contestant then enters the stage to perform his/her pre-prepared speech, answers questions on Jiangsu Province or China, and then finishes with the improvised speech based on the topic selected.

Timing
The hosts will tell the contestant that he/she can begin and signal the timekeeper to start the timer ("记时 开始") within each competition category. When time is up, the timer will beep and the contestant must stop immediately. The contestant is expected to start answering the question or deliver the speech immediately after the timer starts.

Q & A
After the completion of the speech, the contestant will answer follow up questions given by the judges. Contestants should also be prepared to answer questions on Jiangsu Province based on the Study Guide provided on the resources page. The timer runs from questions to question with no pausing or starting. The contestant should indicate when he/she is finished answering the questions with “回答完毕”。

Scoring
Judges will give out scores by showing the score cards right after each student completes his or her performance.

After Finishing
Once a competitor has finished, he/she may return to his or her seat to watch the rest of the competition. However, contestant is not allowed to speak with those who have yet to perform.
