Transportation

From Washington, D.C. Area Airports

  • Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to The George Washington University (5 miles). The airport is a 10-minute taxi ride away, or a 20-minute Metro ride from inside the airport. Just take the Blue Line toward Largo Town Center and disembark at the Foggy Bottom-GWU station.
  • Dulles International Airport (IAD) is 27 miles from GW, about a 30-minute drive away. It is a 1-hour trip to GW via public transit; take the Silver Line Express bus to Wiehle-Reston East station on the Metro’s Silver Line, then ride the Silver Line to the Foggy Bottom-GWU station.
    • Of the three major D.C. area airports, Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is the furtherest away from GW (36 miles). It takes approximately 1 hour to travel that distance by car and 1.5 hours using public transit (take the MARC/Amtrak train to Union Station, then the Metro to the Foggy Bottom-GWU station)

Metro

The Metro system is the most cost-effective and convenient way to travel to GW’s campus and around Washington, D.C. To get to GW's Foggy Bottom campus, simply ride the Metro to the  Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro Station (https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/foggy-bottom.cfm) on either the Blue, Orange and Silver line. Driving Directions

From the North:

  • Interstate 95 South to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring/Northern Virginia
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Turn right onto Florida Avenue (just past the Washington Hilton) and then turn left immediately onto 21st Street
  • Turn right on H Street
  • You may park in the Marvin Center Garage located on H Street between 21st and 22nd Streets (open from 7 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week). For information on additional parking garages on campus, see “Parking” section below.

From the Northwest:

  • Interstate 270 to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Follow directions as shown above in “From the North”

From the West:

  • Interstate 66 and Route 50 both connect with the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge
  • Cross the bridge and exit left at E Street, then again at Virginia Avenue
  • Bear left, following signs for 23rd Street
  • Turn right on 23rd Street and continue a few blocks to campus
  • Turn right on H Street
  • You may park in the Marvin Center Garage located on H Street between 21st and 22nd Streets (open from 7 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week). For information on additional parking garages on campus, see “Parking” section below.

From the South:

  • Interstate 95 to Interstate 395, Arlington Memorial Bridge Exit
  • Cross the bridge and bear left at the Lincoln Memorial
  • Turn left onto 23rd Street, NW, and follow directions as shown above in “From the West”

Parking

If you are using a car, there are several parking garages on GW’s campus, however they are rather expensive. A list of all of the garage and their fees can be found here: https://transportation.gwu.edu/visitors. Street parking is available on campus, but is limited to 2 hours.
