The UHP is now accepting your entries for the 2015 Strasser Writing Prize!
The Strasser prize awards a grand prize of $100 and two runner-ups of $50 to the best papers written in any Honors course over the past year.  You can only enter one paper, so make sure it’s your best!
Submit your entry online after reading the full rules (which have changed from last year).  This year’s deadline for entries is Friday, January 23th, 2015.
The paper is already written!  All you have to do is submit it!

The Most Elusive Lil' Franny Dee is on Her Way!

Are you familiar with a little black-and white image of our favorite owl, Franny Dee? Franny Dee sits on a the “Make an Appointment” button on our website — but there’s another version that’s tiny, and black and white.

That’s Lil’ Franny Dee!

If you spot her, you can win a $10 giftcard.

Here’s how to win:

  1. Look for Lil’ Franny Dee in UHP content (she’s a little owl, and is always black and white).
  2. When you see her, go to our Facebook page.
  3. Be the first to post “I Saw Lil’ Franny Dee in ____________!” on our wall. Make sure to include where you saw her, so we know you’re not just really, really, slow about reading the NewsFlash or something.
  4. The same person can’t win twice in a row.
  5. Old Lil’ Franny Dees don’t count!  Each one can only be won once.

Lil’ Franny Dee could show up anywhere from in the text of an Honors Program newsletter to blog posts to photobombing pictures on Facebook or Twitter.  Keep your eyes peeled and you can win!

$500 SURE Award deadline this week!

You’re almost LATE for a very important date. If you’re interested in winning up to $500 dollars for research, then drop what you’re doing right now and head right back to the rabbit hole.  The deadline for the SURE award is almost here!
The UHP/Sigelman undergraduate Research Enhancement Award is offered to Honors students to help fund their research. Past UHPers have done incredible studies, like finding how television affects political beliefs, and early warning device to detect seizures.
We want to see what you’ve thought up, and we want to help you make this research happen. The deadline for this award is (enter date here.)
All UHP students can apply for this grant in any field of research. You can work on a specific course or just do this for fun. Each individual can win up to $500 to spend on research support. This support can come in the form of:

  • Equiptment/supplies
  • Travel costs to conferences/libraries
  • Image rights
  • Ect.

Funds are available to support research activities from spring, summer, and/or fall semesters of 2013.
No time to say hello, goodbye!  Complete the UHP SURE application ASAP. 
**One last thing!** The application will provide you a link to give to a faculty member. You need their statement of support to be considered, so don’t forget to send it to them!

SURE Award: Exclusive Awards up to $500

In between summer activities like binge watching Netflix and reading Shakespeare(as UHPers do), you may have lingering questions from a particularly interesting class.
Thankfully, the UHP/Sigelman Undergraduate Research Enhancement Award(SURE) is here to help. If you’re an Honors student interested in winning up to $500 for research, you need to apply.
What you can do with this money is amazing. We’ve had honors students create early warning devices to detect seizures, and question the foundations of Hollywood. The talent in the UHP means amazing results, and we’d love to see what you’ve thought up.
The grants help you get your research done by paying for supplies, travel costs, image rights, and whatever else you can think up. Interested? Great! Be sure to get your application in by 9/26/2014.

The Eckles Prize for Freshman Research Excellence

Did you write a stand-out paper for Origins? How about Scientific Discovery, or even, gasp, a non-honors course? Apply for the Eckles Prize today!

This annual prize recognizes students who produce a research project in their freshman year that demonstrates significant and meaningful use of library services and collections at the George Washington University.
First year students are encouraged to submit a research project of any length or format, along with an essay summarizing how they used library resources to complete the project. Students should submit the one project that reflects their best work of the year. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 submissions:

  • 1st Place: $500

  • 2nd Place: $300

  • 3rd Place: $200

 The application deadline for the 2013-’14 academic year is Friday, May 16.

Be the Student Speaker at Graduation

Last year, UHPer Alex Zafran made us all proud by winning the competition to become the student speaker at commencement!
(Related: Adam Bethke and Paul Seltzer spoke at the CCAS Celebrations as well — one of them using it as a platform to stir up some controversy.)

This year, it’s your turn to be the speaker!

Prospective graduates can audition to be the student speaker at Commencement on the National Mall, scheduled on Sunday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m.   Additional information about the competition can be found on the Commencement website.  The deadline to submit entries is Saturday, March 1st.

research_word_in_dictionary_magnified_sepiaDid you know that Honors students have the exclusive opportunity to win up to $500 for their research? It’s true!  Apply to the UHP/Sigelman Undergraduate Research Enhancement Award (SURE) and we might just cut you a check.
We know “Undergraduate Research Enhancement” doesn’t sound that exciting (well, to most people at least, but you areUHPers), but what you can actually do with that money is amazing.  Some of last year’s winners used the funds to create anearly warning device to detect seizures, fund focus groups to learn how television affects political beliefs, and to question the foundations of Hollywood.
The possibilities are endless, but the deadline to apply for funds in the 2014 is Friday, September 27th, 2013.

Who: All UHP Students
What: Research of any kind, in any subject. For a course or for fun, it’s up to you!
When: Spring, Summer,  and/or Fall of 2014
How Much: Up to $500 in research funds per individual winner.
Why: Settle unanswered questions from class; test your interest in a field; set yourself apart in job and grad applications; get the money you need to do the research you want!

Students can apply for grants in support of their research up to the amount of $500 for such needs as (but not limited to) equipment or supplies, travel costs to libraries or conferences, or image rights.  Funds are available to support research activities conducted during the spring, summer, and/or fall semesters of 2012, and applications are due September, 27, 2014.
