MITM Held Its First Departmental Retreat
The GW Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) department held its first retreat on June 26th, 2023 in the City View room of the Elliot School of International Affairs. The retreat featured approximately 70 faculty, staff, and students with 22 posters, 2 faculty talks, and 3 student presentations. The retreat also featured fun activities for attendees to get to know one another including MITM BINGO and “two truths and a lie”. Callie Levinger (Bosque Lab) won the contest for creating the logo for the retreat.
Dr. Sanjay Maggirwar (Department Head) has been planning this retreat since June 2022 along with many students, faculty, and staff. MITM staff Laura Gerety (Administrative Manager), Naiyill Morales Núñez (Program Associate), and Alejandro Navarez (Program Assistant) were crucial in planning the logistics of the event and ensuring the day ran smoothly. The retreat showcased work from multiple disciplines within MITM including parasitic research, neuroscience, and genomics, to name a few.
Catered breakfast and a poster session kicked off the morning. Natalie Howard (Ph.D. candidate, Bosque Lab), Carles Moreno Soriano (laboratory technician, Maggirwar Lab), and Olivia Cox (research assistant, Chiappinelli Lab) won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for their posters, respectively.
Afterward, pilot awardees Dr. Galadriel Hovel-Miner and Dr. Alberto Bosque gave exciting talks on their recent research. Later, students Eric Kenney (postdoc, Brindley Lab), Jessica Schenck (Ph.D. candidate, Miller & Bukrinsky Labs), and Carissa Stover (Ph.D. candidate, Bosque Lab) gave talks on their projects. Jessica Schenck won the award for the best student presentation.
Lastly, Castle Raley (Lab Director, GW Genomics Core) gave an update on the new services offered in the Genomics Core including the NextSeq 2000. At the conclusion of the day, awards were distributed and attendees met up for a happy hour at Tonic!
Congratulations to all the awardees and we can’t wait to see what next year’s MITM Retreat will look like!
