GW-SOBS Student of the Month (November)- Amber Douglass

GW-SOBS Student of the Month

NOVEMBER

Why did you choose to pursue a PhD?

[AD] I decided to pursue a PhD in cancer biology to strengthen my skills as a researcher, especially in critical thinking and independent problem-solving. Contributing to our understanding and advancement of immunotherapies for various diseases is incredibly rewarding to me, knowing that each step forward could help transform treatment options and improve lives.

Tell us about your project!

[AD] My project centers on investigating how platelets affect the effector function of γδ T cells. Our goal is to identify the types of interactions—both direct and indirect—between platelets and γδ T cells. To explore this, I’m isolating and coculturing γδ T cells with platelets, then assessing changes in cytotoxic markers on the T cells and their capacity to kill target cells. Ultimately, I hope to steer this research toward understanding γδ T cell- platelet function in people living with HIV (PLWH) who also have HIV-associated malignancies.

What are some skills (scientific or non-scientific) you have gained while in the program?

[AD] Being in my second year, I have learned how to read scientific papers more efficiently, and apply different ideas and methods to my own research. I have also been able to learn flow cytometry, which is such a useful skill to have for understanding how cells respond to different treatments or manipulations.

What do you like to do outside of the lab?

[AD] Outside of the lab I like to go on hikes, read books, and have game nights with friends. I also love to travel. Over winter break I was able to go to Iceland for a few days!

What are your favorite things to do in the DC/DMV area?

[AD] Some of my favorite activities around DC include exploring new restaurants and breweries. I also enjoy seasonal events in the DMV area, like visiting apple orchards in the fall and the Christmas market in December! The DMV has so much to offer depending on the season.

Any pets?

[AD] I have two cats, Eleanor and Theodore! They’re incredibly cuddly and playful, bringing so much warmth and joy into my life. They’ve given me more love and support than I ever imagined pets could offer!
