GW-SOBS Student of the Month
OCTOBER
Teresa Murphy
(she/her/hers)
Program: Microbiology & Immunology
PI: Dr. Rebecca Lynch
Why did you choose to pursue a PhD?
[TM] I’ve always been incredibly passionate about infectious disease and the interface between basic science research and clinical implementation, so I wanted a solid foundation and to enhance my bench experience!
Tell us about your project!
[TM] I currently am researching viral escape from broadly neutralizing antibodies in vitro. We are utilizing samples from the Military HIV Research Project to study common escape pathways of genetically diverse HIV strains from clinically relevant bNAbs.
What are some skills (scientific or non-scientific) you have gained while in the program?
[TM] My communication and presentation skills have increased exponentially since being in the program. Presenting used to be one of my biggest fears and now I can do it with minimal stress and anxiety!
What do you like to do outside of the lab?
[TM] I love hiking with my dog Baloo, going to concerts and horseback riding!
What are your favorite things to do in the DC/DMV area?
[TM] I definitely love all of the live music opportunities in DC. Living here has made me an avid concert-goer because of all of the access to such amazing venues and artists!
Any pets?
[TM] I have my best buddy, Baloo who I got one month into the program! He is a pug/boxer/pittie mix who loves to snuggle and romp in the woods!
Thank you, Teresa, for sharing!
