As we didn't have any specific topic for this week I decided to use this blog as a note for the upcoming final briefing we will present in August.

This week we have presented our draft briefing on Master Thesis Topic. As you may know the topic of my and my teammate Mustafa's thesis is related to the petroleum industry. The project we chose is something that we proposed compared to other teams that already joined the proposed by competitions, industry projects. Therefore, it requires a bit more time for us to make research on, search for data, etc. In our presentation, we have introduced the primary goal of the project, similar software, and applications, our potential stakeholders, the risks, and an approximate timeline with milestones.

As a result of our presentation, we received valuable comments from professors on how to foster and improve our investigation process. First of all, was a misunderstanding of risks in the Heilmeier Catechism that we used for our presentation. We were supposed to mention all the possible risks but instead, we just mentioned the ones regarding the final result. For example, Professor mentioned that failing to find proper data should also be mentioned as a risk for this particular project. Additionally, all the groups had the same comment on being too detailed during their presentation which is not quite normal for an initial briefing.

All in all, teams presented well, and now that we all know some of the details that have to be changed as for the final briefing our team has to make a more specific and deep analysis especially in data gathering, and make some adjustments and improvements to be ready for final briefing in August.

Hi to all my readers. Welcome to another blog of MS Project series. In the following blog post, I will mention the examples of data that suits well to the project scope and might catch my interest.

To start with, it is worth mentioning that I will be working on this project together with my teammate Mustafa. We have been colleagues working together with petroleum data back in Baku. The main data source will be the NPD data (Norwegian Petroleum Directorate). It is open-source petroleum data that was suggested by our management to use for a particular project. The reason behind it is that company's data structure is very similar to NPD data structures which in turn enables us to integrate it within the system quickly and smoothly. The data files come in CSV format. It perfectly fits the project idea of Predictive Maintenance. NPD also provides the positional data in the shape of Factmaps. Additionally, we would like to search for some other similar formats on the Kaggle platform which encompasses a huge amount of petroleum data which might also help us in the training process. Finally, here are some links that I would like to share:

Thank you for your time!

Good day, my dear followers! In the following blog post, I would like to stress the project idea selection process and the role of research in it. Additionally, I will share with you some draft ideas I have regarding the Master's studies project.

Coming up with an idea is painstaking work that requires creativity and a good understanding of today's needs. Therefore, to find a proper topic for your thesis or present an idea, one should answer the key questions regarding their ideas.

First of all, make sure that you clearly understand and state what are you going to show/create/develop. In my case, as a former worker of an Oil Company back in Baku I decided to link my project idea with the same industry. This gives me credibility as I have got familiar with the oil data previously. Next, one should check for the existing alternatives for his/her idea. For example, there have been numerous implementations of ML in the oil industry so far and my job is to analyze all available, gather the information and then adjust it to my problem/idea and finally enhance the current versions. Then, make sure you clearly understand the effect your project will make and the list of stakeholders benefitting from it. For me, as the topic is industry-oriented the primary benefit will reflect the company and of course the country because it is a state company. It is also essential to identify the risks you may face both throughout the project and as a final result. Again regarding my project, the main risk is an improper selection of data which may lead to unnecessary use of resources. I would also recommend preparing a list of risks and their possible resolutions, so-called risk analysis. Make sure to prepare timing and budgeting schemes - literally the cost and time required for project realization. In my case, it is about 8 months (time restriction).

To conclude, the above-mentioned points are very critical in project selection or idea presentation. Once you answer them you will be able to convince any special stakeholder. Now coming back to my project. Although it is a draft for now it will be a project on applying ML in the oil industry specifically regarding the Repairs.

Thank you for your attention!

Hi! Welcome to my very first blog of the semester. I am Farida Aliyeva - an MSCSDA (Master of Science in Computer Science and Data Analytics) student. This blog's main objective is to introduce myself to a reader so I hope you will enjoy that.

I was born in Baku - the capital city of Azerbaijan. The city of winds on the Caspian Sea. Currently, I stay in Washington DC and will stay here for 6 months and it is my first experience of living far away from my homeland.

I got my Bachelors's degree in Computer Science from ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan. The current program that I am enrolled in is a dual degree program of ADA and George Washington Universities majoring in Computer Science and Data Analytics. Also, I would like to express my gratitude to both Universities for providing students with such an opportunity.

Regarding my interests in Computer Science, I am mostly interested in Machine Learning. It caught my attention during my Bachelors's degree. We had lots of practical assignments on real data and a project. Our team (2 people) worked on a Sentiment Analysis on Azerbaijani tweets. Apart from that, I have been working with SAP BI/BW system back in Azerbaijan.

For now, I am specifically interested in applications of Machine Learning in the Petroleum industry and have already made research and written a paper as part of the Big Data course.

One may say that I am not a typical CS person because I am very sociable and can easily get in touch with new people. I have tried numerous hobbies such as painting, playing the piano. I like cycling and reading books (sci-fi, classic).
