To Apply:
- In the ERAS application, select our program in "Add Programs." We are listed by state - District of Columbia, discipline - Emergency Medicine, and by type of program - PGY 1,2,3,4.
- All of the information that you would like the Selection Committee to review must be submitted through the ERAS system. If we need any supplementary material, we will contact you.
- Students with US Citizenship should apply to the Emergency Medicine Track only. Students requiring visas should apply to the International Emergency Medicine Track.
Application Timeline:
- Applications Due: October 15
- Invitations will start to be sent out the week of October 8th and will continue on a rolling basis until October 31st.
- Letters regarding hold or inactive status will be sent the week of November 1st.
- 2019 Interview Days will be held on November 5, 6 12, 13, 19, 20 and December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18.
- The socials will be on Tuesday evenings either the night before or after applicant interviews from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. The exact location will be updated on the "I got an Interview!" section
Application Requirements:
- ERAS Common Application Form from each Emergency Medicine rotation - letters can be uploaded after the due date for later rotations.
- Total of at least 3 Letters of Recommendation.
Some notes on applying to our program:
- We strongly urge you to ask your EM letter writers to use the Standard Letter of Recommendation form (SLOR). This can be downloaded from http://www.cordem.org/. We do not use any cut-off values for USMLE scores. However, we believe Step 2 scores are more relevant to residency training and Step 2 scores should be uploaded when they are available. GW University requires a Step 2 score for your name to be included on the Match List. The deadline for Step 2 scores is February 15th.
Osteopathic applicants: We strongly encourage you to take the USMLE exams.
International applicants: You must have a very competitive overall application to be considered. Letters from a US emergency physician based on a clinical experience in the US can greatly strengthen your application.
- We only sponsor a J1 visa with no exceptions. You must be certified by the ECFMG before entering our program.
Applicants with prior residency training must submit a letter from the director of each program.
Our residents are selected through the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Criteria for placing applicants on the Rank Order List for the Match include the aforementioned documents and a personal interview. You must take and pass Step 2 of the USMLE and have the results in ERAS in order to be placed on our rank list. Remember that you must request that the National Board of Medical Examiners send your score(s) to the ERAS post office for transmittal to our program. On a case-by-case basis, we occasionally take residents outside of the match.
