Call for Nominations: Editor-in-Chief, GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing
The Graduate Program in Publishing, College of Professional Studies, at the George Washington University, seeks nominations for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing (GWJEP).
The GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing (GWJEP) is a student-managed publication that is completely open-access—free for anyone to access and free for anyone to publish. We welcome articles, case studies, book reviews, commentaries, and other publications from publishing, library, and communication professionals, students, scholars, and specialists on a wide range of topics involving ethical issues in publishing, including but not limited to publishing equity, research integrity, diversity and inclusion, accessibility, peer review practices, open access, sustainability, publishing metrics, workflows, artificial intelligence, and more.

GWJEP is a student-managed publication, led by a managing editor and five committees: Editorial, Content, Marketing, E-Publishing, and Strategy. GWJEP is affiliated with the GW Ethics in Publishing Conference.
GWJEP is published by the Graduate Program in Publishing, College of Professional Studies, at The George Washington University, and is sponsored by the Society for Scholarly Publishing. GWJEP received a Gold Award for Excellence in Student Journals at the SSP’s inaugural EPIC Awards. GWJEP also received a Bronze award at the AM&P 2023 Excel Awards.

To date, GWJEP has published four volumes. Inaugural EIC Randy Townsend, MPS, led the journal from 2020-2022. EIC Lois Jones, MPS, has led the journal from 2022-2025.
Responsibilities
The EIC sets the editorial vision for the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing and works with Publishing Graduate Program student leadership and committees to develop peer review strategy, work with peer reviewers, solicit and oversee submissions, maintain high editorial quality, and collaborate with faculty and students of the Graduate Program in Publishing at the George Washington University. Key aspects of this position include:
- Set the editorial vision of the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing.
- Under the direction of the Program Director of the Graduate Program in Publishing and in collaboration with GW Publishing student leadership, the EIC oversees the submission and peer review system (on Scholastica) and the online presence on GW Publishing’s Manifold instance.
- Oversee the GWJEP Editorial Board: oversee editorial board meetings, and work with the board to set editorial direction and policies.
- Develop the pool of peer reviewers and manage the overall peer-review process.
- Oversee copyediting and proofreading processes of the Journal with GW Publishing students.
- Publish authoritative, impactful and high-quality articles within the journal’s scope.
- Maintain full and transparent communications and a positive working relationship with the GW Publishing Director, Advisory Board, faculty, students, and alumni.
- Serve as an ambassador and advocate for the Journal.
Qualifications
- Accomplishment and expertise in scholarly publishing, and a keen interest in expanding professional capacity in the field
- Experience as managing editor, or other relevant scholarly publishing experience
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Strong communication skills
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Time to dedicate to a demanding role (up to 4 hours/week)
- Master’s Degree in Publishing or a related field
Compensation
GW Publishing provides for a competitive stipend for the Editor-in-Chief. The position includes the opportunity, although not the obligation, of a part-time faculty role in the Master of Professional Studies in Publishing program, College of Professional Studies, George Washington University.
Term
We anticipate the EIC’s term to be two years, commencing January 2026, with the possibility for an additional two-year renewal.
Nomination process
Nominations and self-nominations will be accepted through October 30, 2025 via this nomination form. Nominees will be invited to provide a statement of interest and CV by November 15. The Graduate Program in Publishing Director, working with a search committee comprised of GW Publishing faculty, students, and alumni, will review candidates and select the EIC. The new EIC will start on or around January 10, 2026.
