Throughout the academic year, WGSS will host "Brown Bag Seminars" that will showcase GW faculty and student research on issues concerning gender, race, and sexuality. In the upcoming seminar on Wednesday, December 4th from 12-1 p.m, Associate Professor of Sociology Dr. Ivy Ken will discuss the collaborative scholarship on intersectionality developed by the University of Memphis. This was an important precursor to Kimberlé Crenshaw's foundational essays. Dr. Ken's critical inquiry, informed by the sociology of knowledge, will explore how the humanities and social sciences have been disciplined in ways that have consequences for understanding the dynamics of intersectionality.

Global Ties U.S., a nonprofit partner of the U.S. Department of State, is seeking poster proposals highlighting research on foreign policy, international exchanges, nonprofit management, and advocacy to be presented at its upcoming National Meeting in January 2020.

The Poster Session is an opportunity for academics, scholars, students, and researchers to present their work to our global network of public and private sector partners. Presenters can expect their poster to be seen by over 1,000 international leaders and international exchange professionals who attend the event each year.

The Duke Global Policy (DGP) Program in Geneva, Switzerland | Webinar: Oct. 25th @12pm – details below

Overview: The DGP Program connects students with highly-competitive international summer internship opportunities while providing access to top-policy practitioners and experts through a 3.0 credit applied learning course (also available through our course-only program).  The Program is ideal for students interested in public policy, the environment, energy, global health, economics, migration, and international affairs.  Students typically intern at United Nations agencies (i.e. WHO, IOM, UNEP, etc.) or certain large Geneva-based non-profits.  Candidates should be highly motivated, and possess strong research and writing skills. Apply for a Peacebuilding in Colombia 5th Anniversary Scholarship offered by Universidad de Los Andes in partnership with Red Tree Study!

These scholarships will offer recipients the chance to learn first-hand about the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the challenges of implementing the current peace deal. Students will be enrolled at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, for three weeks, during which time they will combine lectures and seminars on campus with site visits that deliver practical knowledge of the political and social situation in Colombia. They will visit the UN, JEP, Congress, and the Reparation of Victims Unit, for example. They will hear directly from people involved in the conflict, including ex-combatants, social leaders, victims, politicians and negotiators.

To mark the 5th Anniversary of this hugely successful course, we are delighted to announce that we have two full scholarship placesto the value of $3,900 USD each 

Who can apply?
We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, hardworking, and keen to learn more about peace and conflict in Colombia. Candidates do not need prior knowledge of Colombian or Latin American politics, but should demonstrate an eagerness to engage in lively debate during the course tutorials and site visits.  The program is open to students from a range of arts, humanities and social science subjects, and is aimed particularly at those with an interest in conflict resolution and international relations in Latin America. Applicants must be enrolled on a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree program for the academic year 2019/20.

What is included?
The 2020 Peacebuilding in Colombia 5th Anniversary Scholarships cover full participation in the course which runs at Universidad de Los Andes from Monday 8 to Friday 26 June 2020. This includes supervised bed and breakfast accommodation (a private room in a modern student residence with kitchen facilities), an airport pickup upon arrival in Bogota, a schedule of site visits and excursions as part of the academic provision, as well as a supplementary calendar of social and cultural activities, all of which are covered by the scholarship. Participants will need to arrange their own flights to and from Colombia, and to cover the costs of some lunchtime and evening meals.

The scholarship recipients will be joining students from prestigious universities throughout the world. Our students have come from Duke, Brown, Yale the University of Southern California, Vassar College, SFSU, The University of Maryland, Ohio State, Emory University, Boston University and NYU in the USA; Queen's University Belfast, the University of Cambridge, the University of Bristol, Durham University, the University of Sussex, Cardiff University, Aberystwyth University, Sheffield, QMUL and York in the UK, Queen's Ontario and the University of British Columbia, in Canada, Uppsala and Lund in Sweden, and many more. Scholarship application process
Applications for the 2020 Peacebuilding in Colombia 5th Anniversary Scholarships are open until Friday 13 December 2019. Applicants must submit a scholarship application form, accompanying academic reference, and a general program application form by this date in order to apply for the funding. The final selection will be made by the Director of the Masters in Peacebuilding course at Universidad de Los Andes. Red Tree Study will announce the scholarship recipients on or before Friday 24 January 2020. All applicants will be contacted via email to let them know the outcome of their application.

The Journal of Public and International Affairs, now entering its 31st year, is an academic journal publishing the exceptional work of graduate students in U.S. domestic policy, international relations, development studies, and economic policy.

Graduate and professional students from APSIA schools are encouraged to submit policy papers and articles on contemporary issues. JPIA seeks pieces that are not only outstanding in their research quality, but also include specific policy recommendations.

Tufts Student Symposium in Cybersecurity Policy, March 6-7, 2020. Submissions, in the form of an abstract, are due October 23rd.

All areas of cybersecurity policy are welcome, from  economic, legal, political science (including IR), public policy, sociological, to technical with policy implications, with the sole requirement that the work focus on policy issues in cybersecurity. Research submissions are encouraged, but expositions of known approaches to a particular area—a so-called “Systematization of Knowledge” approach—are also welcome. All submissions should include a well researched citing of the literature.

The meeting has two purposes: (i) to share research and (ii) to help create a community of young scholars in the new and highly interdisciplinary research area. Students, whether in undergraduate, professional, MA, MS, JD, or PhD programs, are encouraged to submit; postdocs are also welcome to do so.

The program will begin Friday, March 6 midday and run through late  afternoon of Saturday, March 7. This interdisciplinary meeting will focus on six-ten submissions to the symposium. In the style of working meetings in political science and law, each paper will have a discussant leading the discussion, the purpose of which is to improve the paper prior to publication. The meeting will include a keynote given by Avril Haines on Friday afternoon and conclude mid-late Saturday afternoon with a short talk by Josephine Wolff.

The CLS Program is a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu Most CLS languages do not require previous study of the target language.

The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. The scholarship program includes international airfare, tuition, and all program costs, as well as meals and living accommodations, often with a host family.

The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths, with the purpose of representing the full diversity of the United States. Participants are selected based on their commitment to language learning and plans to apply their language skills to their future academic or professional pursuits.

CLS is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity.  CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century's globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.
