Submissions for the 2022 edition of the Journal of Public and International Affairs (JPIA) at Princeton University are now open! 

JPIA, now entering its 33rd year, is an academic journal in which graduate students from APSIA schools publish research articles and policy papers on U.S. domestic policy, international relations, development studies, and economic policy. 

The Journal seeks pieces that are outstanding in their research quality and include specific policy recommendations. We encourage submissions from students of diverse and traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in policy scholarship, or that engage with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

The deadline to submit is December 30, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

For over six decades, the U.S.-Japan Alliance has been underwriting stability and prosperity in Asia. Political leaders from both sides describe it as 'the cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific Region.' Today, while the Alliance continues to serve its purpose, challenges abound. To help chart the strategic direction of this important relationship, next-generation Japanese and American leaders from academia, public policy, military, and industry, between the ages of 21 and 29, are invited to submit paper proposals that discuss specific issue-areas in U.S.-Japan relations.

10 paper proposals will be chosen whose authors will form the 2021-2022 cohort. Cohort members will be invited to join an in-person workshop on U.S.-Japan Alliance in Tokyo in Spring 2022, and will also have opportunities to attend future conferences and workshops related to U.S.-Japan relations, and regional security, sponsored by Pacific Forum.

An honorarium of US$ 1,000 each will be provided to the top six authors whose work will be published in an edited volume.

SUBMISSION

To apply, please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words describing the U.S. and/or Japanese perspective on the Alliance over the past 60 years at the bottom of this form. You can offer a broad assessment of the topic (including emerging challenges in U.S.-Japan relations and policy recommendations), or focus on a specific facet of the relationship (e.g., maritime security, cyber security, capacity-building for Southeast Asia, space collaboration, COVID19, and public health cooperation, strengthening alliance mechanisms addressing regional security challenges, improving people-to-people ties, and among others ).

Note: We seek high-caliber research papers (with clearly identifiable dependent and independent variables) between 4,000 and 7,000 words. Policy recommendations should be based on solid original analysis and data.

Abstracts due by November 24, 2021

Selected authors will have to submit the first draft of full papers (4,000 to 7,000 words) by March 5, 2022, to be invited to a workshop in Tokyo in Spring 2022.
