Please join the State Department in welcoming author and entrepreneur Carla Harris, who will serve as the keynote speaker during the Department’s 2017 National African American History Month Program.  Ms. Harris is a Vice Chairman, Wealth Management, Managing Director and Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley.  She is responsible for increasing client connectivity and penetration to enhance revenue generation across the firm. She formerly headed the Emerging Manager Platform, the equity capital markets effort for the consumer and retail industries and was responsible for Equity Private Placements.  Ms. Harris has extensive industry experiences in the technology, media, retail, telecommunications, transportation, industrial, and healthcare sectors.

Ms. Harris was recently named to Fortune Magazine’s list of “The 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in Corporate America”, U. S. Bankers Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Finance (2009, 2010, 2011), Black Enterprise’s Top 75 Most Powerful Women in Business (2010), to Black Enterprise Magazine’s “Top 75 African Americans on Wall Street” (2006 – 2011), and to EssenceMagazine’s list of “The 50 Women Who are Shaping the World”, Ebony’s list of the Power 100 and “15 Corporate Women at the Top” and was named “Woman of the Year 2004” by the Harvard Black Men’s Forum  and  in 2011 by the Yale Black Men’s Forum. Carla is also the author of the several books including, Strategize to Win (2014) and of Expect to Win (2009) (Hudson Press).

The author will participate in a book signing immediately following the event from 12:50 – 1:20pm.  Guests who wish to purchase Ms. Harris’s book, Strategize to Win, should do so in advance as copies will not be available for sale at the event.  Due to time constraints, Ms. Harris will sign one book per guest.

PRE-CLEARANCE & ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUTSIDE GUESTS:  All outside guests planning to attend should send RSVPs to Geoff Moore MooreG@state.gov no later thanFebruary 13, 2017.  If you do not have a State Department ID badge, please provide your full name, email address, driver’s license number and state of issuance when submitting your RSVP.  Guests should arrive at the Department through the C Street entrance (22nd and C St, NW) 30 minutes prior to start of the event in order to allow enough time to process through security.  Upon arrival, guests will need to present a Government issued ID card and proceed through security in the white kiosk outside of the main entrance.  Guests will need to be checked in at the front desk by a State Department escort and escorted to the event venue.

 

 

Research Days: A Showcase of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Endeavor

Call for Abstracts

Undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students are invited to showcase their work and compete for prize money at the 22nd annual Research Days. This event features poster presentations and keynote speakers and is dedicated to highlighting the breadth of research, creative scholarship and cultural discovery being done at GW by students and postdoctoral researchers. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this showcase!

All abstracts must be submitted by February 28, 2017 and are required to have mentor or advisor approval.

  • April 4th focuses on arts, business, education, engineering, humanities, law, sciences and other topics.
    • Participants are required to present a poster or equivalent.
    • All undergraduates wishing to compete for prizes should present on this date.
    • In addition to the primary abstract categories, participants can opt into five specialized categories (community-based participatory research; diversity and inclusion; innovation and entrepreneurship; gender equality; and sustainable development) to compete for additional recognition and prizes.
  • April 5th focuses on health and medicine topics with participants from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Milken Institute School of Public Health, the School of Nursing and the Biomedical Engineering program.
    • Medical residents, Institute for Biomedical Sciences students and researchers from Children's National Medical Center and the DC VA Hospital are invited to present their research on this day.
    • Participants not selected for oral presentation will be required to present a poster.
    • In addition to the primary abstract categories, participants can opt into specialized categories (innovation and entrepreneurship; and gender equality) to compete for additional recognition and prizes.

Spring 2017 applications for Knowledge in Action Career Internship Fund (KACIF) Travel Grants will be accepted starting Tuesday, January 17, 2017.

The KACIF Travel Grants are available to GW students who are participating in internships that will advance their career development and who need assistance in paying for their transportation to and from their internship location.

This reimbursement, which cannot exceed $300.00, can be used only for necessarily unpaid internships, i.e., typically those internships with non-profit, governmental, educational and non-governmental organizations that genuinely lack the financial resources to pay salaries or wages to their interns.

The summer 2017 Youth in International Development and Foreign Affairs internship program will close for applications on January 25, 2017This represents a deadline extension from previous announcements.

The United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) launched its internship program in 2013.  USICD's internship program focuses on U.S. citizen youth with disabilities who intend to pursue careers in international development or foreign affairs.

The summer 2017 internship program will bring a group of talented U.S. citizen graduate students, recent graduates, and rising college juniors and seniors with disabilities from across the U.S. to Washington, DC, for nine weeks. This will include a one-week training and orientation program followed by an eight-week internship at an international organization in the Washington, DC, area. USICD will cover the cost of accessible shared dormitory housing during the program, reimburse travel expenses between DC and US locations, and provide a limited stipend.  Interns will need to be in DC from May 28 to July 29, 2017.
