Apply to be an Elliott School Graduate Student Orientation Leader!
Each fall we welcome over 300 new graduate students to the Elliott School community. The Office of Academic Advising & Student Services is recruiting student volunteers to participate in Fall 2015 New Graduate Student Orientation.
Required Events:

Friday, August 28, 2015: New Graduate Student Orientation (8:00am- 5:00pm, Reception to follow)

  • Meet & greet incoming students
  • Be an ambassador for your program
  • Participate in the Student Panel session
  • Join new students, faculty, and staff for lunch
  • Help new students navigate the University

Monday, August 17- Friday, August 21, 2015: New International Student Orientation hosted by International and Academic Initiatives

  • Meet & greet incoming international students
  • Show new international students around GW
  • Accompany international students on site visits and cultural events around DC
  • Help new international students settle into their new surroundings
Eligibility & Application
To have your application considered, you must be a current Elliott School graduate student in good academic standing.

If you are interested in becoming a 2015 Graduate Student Orientation Leader, please complete an application. Applications are due by 6:00 pm on Friday, April 17, 2015.

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will take place at the end of April.

The U.S. Foreign Policy Summer Program is still accepting applications for both sessions! This two-week, three credit program at GW offers students an opportunity to engage with a wide variety of experts in U.S. Foreign Policy. The course hosts students from around the world, so participants can expect to learn new perspectives from their classroom colleagues as well as the distinguished speakers. Fall 2015 Registration opens on March 23rd for all degree-seeking graduate students. A graduate advisor will be available for online advising Monday, March 23 - Wednesday March 25 from 8:00 am-4:00 pm and 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm.

Please keep in mind that during these conversations the advisor does not have access to your records. Online advising is intended to provide quick answers to your general questions.

As you count down the days until graduation, you're probably beginning to reflect on your experience as an Elliott School student. If the feelings of nostalgia inspire you to share your story and bestow words of wisdom and hopes for the future onto your fellow classmates, we want to hear from you.   
This spring one student will be selected to represent the graduating class as the Elliott School Student Speaker. The selected student will give a 3-4 minute speech in front of fellow graduates, family, friends, faculty and staff at the Elliott School Celebration on May 15, 2015.

Eligibility:
  • Elliott School graduate and undergraduate studentsAlyssa 2012
  • Graduation terms:

-graduated in Summer 2014 (did not attend Spring 2014 commencement)

-graduated in Fall 2014

-applied to graduate in Spring 2015 or Summer 2015

Interested students should follow the speech submission process:

  1. Prepare a speech of less than four minutes that is of general interest to all graduates (both undergraduate and graduate students), faculty, staff and guests and is relevant to graduation. The speech should be the one you would give at the Elliott School Celebration.
  2. Upload the text of your speech. The speech submission website is open and will close on March 17, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted.
  3. Students chosen for in-person auditions will be contacted via e-mail no later than Thursday, March 19, 2015.
  4. In-person auditions will begin March 25, 2015.

A selection committee will choose one Elliott School Celebration speaker. The winner will then work with our staff to modify his or her remarks for the celebration. Please direct any questions regarding the ESIA Student Speaker Competition to esiacelebration@gmail.com

Speech submission DEADLINE March 17, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. 

The University Commencement Student Speaker Competition is run through the Office of University Events. If you are interested in auditioning to speak on the National Mall, please contact the Office of University Events.

Students can apply for both speaking roles, but if selected as the University Student Speaker and the Elliott School Student Speaker the student will not be permitted to speak at both events.

If you plan to pursue Optional Practical Training (OPT) upon graduation, obtaining a support letter from your academic advisor is part of International Services Office's (ISO) process. Please read this information before requesting the letter from your advisor.

The Graduate Student Services Team at Gelman Library will be holding an ETD workshop about what to expect when you submit your manuscript via the ProQuest ETD Administrator.  Specifically it will discuss Publishing Options, Embargo Options, Access options via major search engines, options on filing for copyright.  Time after the half hour workshop has been scheduled in for questions on any ETD related subject.
