During the 1994-1995 academic year, Marina Shakalova was a visiting research professor at The George Washington University, affiliated with the Research Program in Social and Organizational Learning. Her stay in the USA was supported by the Junior Faculty Development Program, which is funded by the U.S.Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars. Her mentor at GW was Professor Chuck Toftoy.

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Marina Shakalova was dean of the Extra Mural Department at the All-Russian Foreign Trade Academy. She began working there in 1988 as an assistant professor of economics. She has also taught as a visiting professor at the Center for European Studies at the University of Limburg in the Netherlands.

She received her university degree in 1980 in international economic relations from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. There she received her doctorate in 1983 in economics.

She took part in the International Executive Program in Washington 1992 and the East-West Academic Exchange in Toronto in 1992.
