Philip W. Wirtz

Dr. Philip Wirtz is a Psychologist with a tenured full professor faculty appointment at the George Washington University in the departments of Psychology, Decision Sciences, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration. He served as statistical consultant to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's Project MATCH for 10 years, as a contributing editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and as the Associate Director of the George Washington University Social Research Group. Dr Wirtz is an author or co-author of numerous journal articles and book chapters focusing on clinical and social psychological aspects of recovery from health problems, especially victimization and alcohol/drug dependence, and is a widely cited on issues involving complex statistical methodology. He is co-creator of the Adolescent Drinking Inventory, an instrument for identifying youth who are at a long-term risk for alcohol programs. He has served as Vice Dean for Programs and Education of the George Washington University School of Business.

Dr. Wirtz holds a BA in Psychology from the George Washington University. He earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Purdue University and a Ph.D. degree in Applied Social Psychology from George Washington University. Before assuming the position of Vice Dean, Dr. Wirtz served for many years on the GW Faculty Senate executive committee, and as an elected faculty representative on the search committees for the University’s president and provost. He is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching and service, including the prestigious George Washington Award and (twice) the Peter B. Vaill Award for Teaching.

Dr. Wirtz' current research focus is in the area of development of psychosocial models of emergency preparedness.
